Modular knitting- step by step
Let's
learn step by step how to use the modular knitting technique to knit some
non-geometrical patterns but more complicated ones. We'll use a scheme of
a flower bud for example .
Start with vertical rows from an element 1. Cast 8 loops of dark green thread on a needle - single cell on the drawing. Knit 8 ridges and do a simple increase at the beginning of each ridge. Remember that ridge is two rows crafted by knit loops. So at the end we have 16 loops on the needle - two cells on the drawing (see photo 1).
Then we start knitting an element 2 with dark pink thread. Knit 8 ridges knitting two loops together before the edge stitch at the end of each row on front side until there will be 8 loops on the needle.(single cell on the draft). Bind off the stitches (see photo 2).
Element 3 we shall knit as horizontal ridges. Pick up a light green loop at a point A from under the edge loop of element 2. Knit horizontal ridges by picking up the new loop at the end of each row on right side from under the edge loop of element 2. On the back side we replace this loop on the working needle without knitting , and knit them at the end of the next row. Similarly, knit until there will leave 8 loops on the needle (single cell). Cast on 8 loops from under edge loops of element 1, picking up them with the needle carrying all previous loops (see photo 3).
Now we have 16 loops on the needle. Knit simple decreasing one loop at the beginning and at the end of each front-side-row until the last loop remains that have to be bind off (see photo 4). Now the element is ready. Include them in the basic cloth (see photo 5).
